Nature Therapy Through Erasmus+: A Participant’s Journey in Visegrád, Hungary

Healing in Nature: My Erasmus+ “Nature Therapy” Experience in Hungary
by a project participant

From the 1st to the 8th of May 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ youth exchange project titled “Nature Therapy,” held in the scenic town of Visegrád, Hungary. This unforgettable experience brought together 25 participants from Hungary, Cyprus, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria to explore the healing power of nature, connect across cultures, and grow personally and emotionally.

A Warm Welcome – Day 1

Our journey began with excitement and curiosity as we arrived at our accommodation nestled among the hills of Visegrád. In the evening, the organizing team welcomed us warmly and introduced the goals of the project. We learned that the focus would be on mental well-being, emotional resilience, and intercultural learning, all through nature-based methods.

Getting to Know Each Other – Day 2

On the second day, we set the foundation for a positive group dynamic by establishing group rules and engaging in icebreaker games. This helped everyone feel more comfortable and connected. Later, we created mandalas using only natural materials, encouraging mindfulness and creativity. A session of drawing with meditation followed, allowing us to slow down and be present. In the evening, laughter filled the room during a team challenge called “The Boss of Visegrád.”

Exploring Mental Health – Day 3

The third day focused on mental health and anxiety, with practical workshops on managing stress and building emotional awareness. It was inspiring to hear different perspectives and realize we are not alone in facing these challenges. In the evening, it was our turn to present Bulgarian culture, and we proudly shared traditional food, music, and customs with our new friends.

Connection with Animals and Plants – Day 4

We spent the fourth day outdoors, starting with a visit to a local stable to learn about farm life and the therapeutic impact of animals. Later, we participated in a Herbal Workshop, discovering the calming and healing properties of different plants. It was a peaceful, hands-on experience that brought us closer to nature.

The Journey Continues – The Following Days

The rest of the week was just as rich and meaningful. We hiked through stunning landscapes, took part in team-building games, enjoyed yoga sessions, and celebrated Eco-Day, where we focused on sustainability. We also attended workshops that encouraged us to reflect on our personal future goals and how to live in harmony with the environment.

Each evening, an intercultural night allowed participants to showcase their country’s traditions, dances, and cuisines. These nights were full of laughter, music, and deep connections that transcended borders.

Farewell – A Bittersweet Goodbye

On the final day, we gathered one last time to share our reflections and emotions about the week. Saying goodbye was difficult—these people had become more than just fellow participants; they were friends, mentors, and companions on a journey of growth.

Final Thoughts

The “Nature Therapy” Erasmus+ project was more than just an educational trip. It was a transformative experience that taught me about self-care, the power of community, and the importance of reconnecting with nature. I am deeply grateful to have been a part of it and will carry the lessons and friendships with me for a lifetime.
