Hannah Volunteering in Bulgaria

My name is Hannah, I am from Iceland and I'm staying in Bulgaria as a volunteer. Now my third month here is ending. I have done a lot of things already, both in my volunteering work and outside of that. I am a volunteer through EVS, European Voluntary Service, and they have made sure that I meet and get to know all the other volunteers that are working here through them. I am very grateful for that, I've had such a good time getting to know them, and we also meet regularly in different parts of Bulgaria. In ЗА ТЕБI go to workshops where we do all kinds of crafting twice a week, which is very nice.

This photo is taken from Grand Mall Varna in the Christmas bazaar where we were selling the things that we had crafted in the workshops. Many of the participants of the workshop showed up as well and helped with the bazaar, it was very nice.

I also teach English to one of the boys in the workshop, and now I've started planning my own personal project, which will be making a short-film with the youngsters in the workshop and perhaps other youth groups as well.

I am a bit ashamed to say that my Bulgarian is still very bad, I can't have a conversation in Bulgarian yet. But I will work hard and learn it before I go back!

Outside of my work I have been going to the gym which is closest to my home, and playing with some bands. One of them is a Ska/punk band called Pizza, and the other is a salsa group called Charanga. I enjoy very much playing with both of these bands, they are very different but both very nice. I have also made some friends which I have traveled with, but I haven't done nearly enough traveling! I really want to discover as much of Bulgaria as possible, although maybe I will do more of it when it is not so cold.

This is taken in Стара Загора, where I met with some of the other volunteers over a weekend to eat, drink and have a good time. We were trying to slide down the hill on a paper box, although it didn‘t quite work out as intended.

Before I came here I could barely make myself instant noodles for dinner, but now since I came here I've done a lot of experimenting in the kitchen, which has both gone very well but also not so well (for example when I cooked white fish and it tasted like rubber. Afterwards I checked on Google Translate what калмар is, and found out that it was not normal white fish but squid!) so that has been very good for me.

I have of course grown as a person in more areas than just cooking, but that is a good example of one of the many things I have, and am yet to learn.
